Hey there,
Im in the process of buying a new homes in manteca,ca. I have the option of getting a tankless water heater instead of a 50gal. water heater. They are both going to run on natural gas.
But I dont know how efficient they are and if they are actually going to save me any money on my bills?
ps: they are putting the tankless water heater in the attic if the option is purchased. Weird huh?

You save money because your water heater is not constantly heating 50 gallons of water. It heats what you use.
Tankless water heaters are a new concept, and yes they do save on energy, however they require specialist servicing. My personal choice would be time tested storage type, which although being less efficient has been proven to work with minimum servicing.
We installed the Tankless option in our home about five months ago (in anticipation of Summer) and I can tell you that it has made a difference in our electricity as compared to last year…..this of course is coupled with a few other changes in our household; changed out all of the light bulbs to energy efficient ones, A/C is at 77 all of the time, darkening some of the windows in our house and using the cold water option when washing our clothes….the light bulb, window film and washing with cold water took place prior to the water heater installation but I can tell you that we are saving around $100 a month as compared to last year…hope this helped!
If its a Noritz tankless I would say yes get it.
Also make sure you get the full condensing unit @ 93% and not the
modulating model 82% efficiant.
I built a showroom for Noritz and I can tell you I installed a working hottub, 1 kitchen sink, 2 bathroom sinks, and 4 showerheads in the display area with all the models that they make active and functioning as part of the working display and their smallest model ran all of them at the same time.
The ones at home depot and Lowes (ecosense and GE) are garbage.
